Hey Everyone! In today’s blog post, I want to talk about collaborations. In art, film, and fashion, collaboration is very common, and a lot of good work can come out of it. It is also quite common to see collaborations between different types of art; for example, between a visual artist and fashion designer. The products of these moments of “teamwork” give more perspective to the work because different people with different experiences are working and brainstorming together. I am not really up to date in the world of fashion and art, and I do not really watch short films in which collaborations would be more common, so I do not really have a “favourite” collab. However, I did some research and looked for a collaboration that I could comment on and write about. I ended up looking at some sneaker collabs. from Nike and Adidas, and I found a very interesting show which was a collaboration between Adidas and Jeremy Scott.
Adidas, as most of us know, is a very popular clothing brand which specializes in casual and sporting clothing. In the past few years, there have been a lot more collabs. between artists and clothing companies like Adidas. In this collaboration, Adidas was mostly just making the shoe, designing the form of it and the usability, while Jeremy Scott created the print.
Jeremy Scott is an American fashion designer. He is the creative director and owner of the fashion label Moschino and is seen as “fashion’s last rebel.” I personally do not like his work, but I think this shows an amazing thing about collaborations: they bring out new things from artists and creators. In this example, I find most of his fashion very unappealing, but I enjoy the design and look of the shoe that he made as a collaboration with Adidas.
The specific collaboration that was made was a sneaker called “Keith Harring,” a tribute to the artist of the same name. The print of the shoe is in the style of Harring’s street art. It was received well, and is on the list of the top 25 best shoe collaborations on complex.com, which is a pop culture site. The shoe was received well because it was seen as a very “tasteful” tribute and it was also seen a great thing for Scott to do, bringing the work of other artists into view. I really like the style of Keith Harring which was emulated by Scott in this collaboration and it is very creative and fun.
Personally, I think that working creatively with others can help to bring out the best in everyone and let everyone see things from different perspectives. Everyone has their own ideas and working together lets the others see the ideas and may influence them positively and make them more creative. It can definitely improve the vision of your work because you see things through a new pair of eyes. However, there also would be challenges because everyone would probably want to create or do their idea and maybe not be open to others’ thoughts.
