INSTAGRAM APPRECIATION

Hi everyone! Today I decided to talk a bit about Instagram; specifically, I will be talking about Casey Neistat’s feed and some things I like about it. First of all, Casey Neistat is a YouTube personality, blogger, entrepreneur, and video-maker. He deals with technology a lot in his videos. For example, he has done collaborations with Samsung, he does reviews of computers, phones, smart watches, etc. As well, he has made commercials for Nike and other companies. On his Instagram feed, he posts a lot of photos of New York and himself in the city, many of which are taken during his morning run. He also occasionally posts videos or promotions for his projects.

There are certain aspects of his Casey’s feed that really capture my attention and that I really enjoy. First, I really like the openness that Casey has in his feed. He is not afraid to post funny or quirky photos of himself, even though many thousands of people will see them. In my opinion, this gives his feed a really nice feel and it really lets the viewer connect with him on an almost personal level. He does this as well through posting pictures of his family and his day-to-day life, instead of just fancy events or when he is dressed up like some celebrities do.

For example, in this photo, he is being a bit goofy showing himself wearing weird glasses with his wife and friend. Second, I like the great photos on his feed. By this, I mean that he has very well taken photos, not only by himself, but also taken by others who he knows or hires. The mix of personal/unprofessional photos and very high quality ones (like the example below) is very refreshing and it really draws me to his feed. Once I started looking through his feed for this post, I couldn’t stop!

This brings me to the third thing that I really like about his feed; that is the creativity/experimental feel of it. I find that he many of his photos have a sort of experimental aspect to them. He likes to try new techniques and ways to capture beautiful and interesting photographs. His feed has many different styles of photography including landscapes, selfies, city-scapes, etc. In each different photo, he uses a new and original technique to capture the moment. Sometimes he may do along exposure, use a reflective surface like a window to create a cool effect, or use his sunglasses to show the subject, as in the photo below.  This experimental feel makes every new post exciting, instead of him just doing the same thing for his whole feed. Although the feed doesn’t have an overall uniform look, every single photo is intriguing in its own way. Another note: I really enjoy the colour schemes of Casey’s photos. Again using the photo below as an example, I love the purple and blues in the photo, contrasting with his face and cap which are darker and in shadow. Many of his other photos also include cool colour schemes, especially focusing on contrast between bright colours in a grey or silver city like New York. I noticed that he likes to post photos of sunsets or sunrises in the city which I like a lot. (one really nice example of this can be seen at the very bottom of the post.

Overall, Casey Neistat’s feed and style will really inspire me in the future and I will bear it in mind when taking photos or crafting a look. When I am taking photos, I will always try to be super creative and to “think outside of the box.” As well, I will try to capture bright and vibrant colours which can act as a very good highlight that catches the attention of the viewer. As well, I will try to incorporate technology to its fullest potential to create the best possible finished product. This could include editing, or using features on a camera to create cool effects, like a long exposure. All of these things will make for better and more original photos that look organic, modern, and just high quality overall!
